Analysis of the Current Status and Trends in China’s Pet Food Trade

2026-04-29

In recent years, China’s pet food industry has experienced robust growth, with the urban pet-owning population reaching 68.44 million. The rising status of pets has fueled rapid market expansion. On the production side, national pet feed output reached 1.13 million tonnes in 2021, supported by 357 companies, underscoring the continuous scaling up of the industry.

In the realm of import–export trade, the value of dog and cat food imports and exports has grown from US$740 million to US$1.916 billion over the past decade, more than doubling the total trade volume. China remains a net exporter, but import growth has been even faster, with import value reaching US$670 million in 2022. Pet food is available in a wide variety of categories, including complete diets, treats, and nutritional supplements.

Analysis of the import market shows that the United States is China’s largest source of imports, accounting for more than half of the total, driven by strong demand for high-end pet food. In contrast, the export market is becoming increasingly diversified, with the United States, Germany, Japan, and other countries serving as major export destinations; exports are currently dominated by mid-range products but are gradually expanding into the premium segment.

Looking ahead, the import substitution effect will become more pronounced, product segmentation will deepen, and new trade models such as cross-border e-commerce will create additional growth drivers. The policy environment will become more standardized, and free-trade agreements like the RCEP will further boost exports. The pet-food industry is poised for higher-quality development, enriching people’s lives and contributing to a better future!

What are the main functions of pet chew toys?

During the process of chewing on dental chews, the rough surface effectively scrubs the teeth, acting like a deep clean. This friction helps remove plaque and food debris from the tooth surface, thereby reducing the formation of tartar. Tartar is a major cause of oral diseases in pets, such as bad breath, gingivitis, and periodontitis; if left untreated over the long term, it can even lead to tooth loosening and loss. Regularly providing dental chews can significantly lower the risk of these oral problems, keeping your pet’s mouth clean and healthy and ensuring fresh breath.
